This cruise liner from Carnival Cruise Lines made her debut in Dover, England, in July 2008. Interior designer Joe Farcus has created a theme of celebratory splendid things. At 113,300 tons, the
Carnival Splendour, the first of a new class, will take 3,006 passengers on cruises to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South America (a Carnival first) and then finally settle down for year-round 7-day Mexican Riviera itineraries beginning in March 2009.
The Splendour is Carnival's biggest vessel to date. It is a slightly larger version of Carnival's Conquest-class ships, and passengers who've sailed Carnival before will be familiar with the layout.
Some of the new public room themes and offerings are El Mojito, a sidewalk cafe that might be found in Old Havana with walls decorated with Cuban posters; El Morocco, recalling New York City's famous and long-gone night club with its Zebra-striped leather furniture and Moroccan decor; Our House, a sports bar with vitrine models of sports stadiums and tabletops with stadium photos; and the Red Carpet dance club where patrons enter past mannequins of others waiting to get in and once inside are surrounded by images of reporters and paparazzi.
The Pinnacle Supper Club, an extra tariff streakhouse and seafood restaurant, has a skylight to view the stars above and a glass dance floor suspended over a three-deck atrium. The Seaside Theater shows films outside on deck on a 270-sq-ft screen and be served by two bars and two food lines. The Sky Dome, a two-deck-high midships lido area, is protected by a sliding glass dome. An outdoor after deck features an Indian Tandoori menu and sandwiches and side dishes from a New York-style deli with an ocean liner theme that includes half models of famous liners.
Camp Carnival, at 5,500 sq ft, has two levels and a water spray park. A small-but-cute water park for young cruisers is installed on one of the ship's top decks. One of the biggest changes is an expansion of the spa, to 40,000 sq ft. This facility, stretching out over two decks, includes "spa cabins," a multiroom thermal suite and the line's first thalassotherapy pool. In keeping with cruising to a slightly cooler clime, the thalassotherapy pool is covered by a glass dome, and the pool deck has a retractable roof.
