The relatively small size of Lisbon means most facilities are near each other. Some hotels, however, are better suited for particular purposes. For instance, if you prefer large, modern facilities in the center of things, choose a hotel near the Avenida da Liberdade. Smaller, more traditional hotels can be found in the Bairro Alto and Alfama hillside neighborhoods, which are also within walking distance of many sights. Be aware many smaller hotels have no heating and can get uncomfortable in colder winters. Northeast of the city center is Parque das Nacoes—this is a good area to stay in if you need to be close to the airport and want easy access to some of the best nightlife. If you plan to attend a big international event or to visit during summer (mid-June to September), book your room well in advance.
