Except for infrequent periods when major conventions are held in town, there is an overabundance of fine hotel rooms in Santiago. So the potential exists, if one cares to haggle a bit, to strike deals.
The newer luxury hotels are located in the eastern Santiago boroughs of Las Condes and Vitacura. This area also has top restaurants, the U.S. Embassy and some convention centers. Although several older downtown hotels have been refurbished, the trend has been for business travelers to stay in the eastern boroughs. Providencia, meanwhile, offers a strong combination of affordability and convenience, including some attractive boutique-hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. These neighborhoods are all near subway stops, allowing for inexpensive and quick transportation throughout the city.
