Set on 243 acres of tawny hillside, nearly 3 miles south of Big Sur Lodge, this intimate hotel may lack the deluxe touches and mystique of its oceanfront neighbor, Post Ranch, but it is working hard to compete with its refinements and delightful service. The hotel does not rest on its laurels. It reopened in October 2008 after completing an $18 million renovation, and it has added new rooms that create the kind of ambience guests paying upward of $1,000 per night expect.
