Calgary Things to See & Do Guide

Calgary Shopping

Perhaps it's the long winters—or the blend of international cultures—that has helped Calgary evolve into a great shopping mecca. Whether you are looking for artwork, antiques or fashion, Calgary will keep you busy with its many shopping districts, outlets and malls. Be sure you have a map and are oriented with the major shopping districts before you head out. Most centers have interior corridors, protecting shoppers from harsh weather.

For serious shoppers, downtown Calgary is a must-visit. Hundreds of stores—upscale boutiques, department stores and specialty shops—are connected by the Plus 15 walkways. Start with a look at landmark Hudson's Bay Co. department store, built in 1911. You can also stroll along Stephen Avenue Walk, an unenclosed pedestrian thoroughfare lined with beautifully restored sandstone buildings full of shops and restaurants. The trendy Eau Claire Market has a picturesque setting along the south bank of the Bow River across from Prince's Island Park, but shopping at the market is only so-so unless you're buying groceries or wine.

The Kensington District, northwest of the city center but within walking distance, is a favorite outdoor shopping area. It has an eclectic collection of boutiques and cafes. Antiques hounds should visit Ninth Avenue Southeast in Inglewood (east of downtown), where three blocks of antiques stores sell all kinds of merchandise. Other shopping streets are 17th Avenue Southwest between Centre and 14th streets, and Fourth Street Southwest south of 17th Avenue.

Of course, there are malls, too. Calgarians love their shopping malls, and when the snow flies (as early as September and as late as May), these places are packed. Major complexes include Sunridge Mall in the northeast, Market Mall in the northwest, and Chinook Centre and Southcentre in the southwest.

Shopping Hours: Monday-Saturday 9 am-6 pm. Many stores stay open till 9 pm Thursday and Friday. Most stores are open Sunday noon-5 pm. Malls are generally open Monday-Friday 9:30 am-9 pm, Saturday 9:30 am-5 pm, Sunday noon-5 pm.

Department Stores

Calgary used to be a major center for department stores, but in recent years, these stores have become passe in Canada. The most famous chain, Eaton's, closed in 2003. Department stores have been replaced (except for the Bay) by huge discount shopping outlets and the very trendy Winners, which specializes in apparel, home decor, accessories, toys and furniture.

Galleries

Calgary has more than 50 galleries (artist-run, commercial and public), many of them downtown and in nearby neighborhoods such as the Fourth Street/Mission district, which runs along Fourth Street south of 13th Avenue Southwest. The Gallery Guide, available in galleries around the city, provides a full listing of galleries and art happenings.
