Calgary Vacation Planning Guide

When To Go to Calgary

Calgary has four full seasons, with pleasant summers (averaging 70 F/23 C) and winters that can be cold (averaging 9 F/-11 C). The city's weather is extremely variable—summer days can be hot (95 F/33 C), but the city has experienced snow in every month of the year. Occasionally in winter, warm Chinook winds raise the temperature rapidly, almost instantly melting the snow. We think the best time to visit is from midsummer to early fall. Take along a warm sweater or a jacket for the evening chill. If you're planning a trip into the mountains, take something for the rain and cold—no matter what time of year. Because of the altitude, the weather around Banff is especially unpredictable—even in summer, the evenings can be very cool.

What to Wear

Business-casual is the norm for downtown dress, though you'll still see bankers and lawyers in suits. Those working in creative fields, such as graphic design, architecture and technology may have more casual dress codes. During Stampede week, locals dress in western duds, but tourists are forgiven if they forget their Stetsons. Many bars will provide a complimentary hat, so don't worry.

Lightweight clothing is appropriate for Calgary's summer (June-August). Summer evenings are frequently cool enough to warrant a sweater or light jacket. Mosquitoes are a problem only around parks and rivers, but if you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, pack insect repellent. Don't forget to use sunscreen. Winter (December-March) brings dry, cold weather around 9 F/-11 C and some snow, so take warm coats, hats, gloves and boots. Spring is rainy: Don't forget your umbrella. Fall is generally pleasant and dry.
