Although it lacks Colonia's density of colonial monuments, slow-paced Carmelo offers a glimpse of
what Colonia was like before its tourism-driven gentrification. Carmelo has good boat connections to Argentina via the Buenos Aires suburb of Tigre, and it's an unpretentious destination with a few surprises—specifically, the restaurant at the nearby Four Seasons Resort Carmelo and the restaurant/wine bar at Finca Narbona, which is a winery as well as a working farm. 235 km/145 km northwest of Montevideo.
