The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country rich in natural beauty, wildlife and tribal culture. But for the past several years, the nation formerly known as Zaire has been mired in a confusing, destructive war with both its own people and its neighbors.
And war is only one of several demons plaguing the Congo. The government has a reputation for rampant corruption, elections have been postponed indefinitely, the economy is a total wreck, and the infrastructure is in shambles. The Congo has hit bottom, and it is uncertain how long it will remain there—and how long it will be before the country will be stable enough to attract visitors.
