Francistown Travel Guide

Francistown Guide Overview

Francistown, Botswana, is one of the oldest settlements in the country and the site of Southern Africa's first gold rush. Francistown was named after a prospector, Daniel Francis, and Blue Jacket Street, its main street, after the denim jacket worn by an old Australian prospector, Sam Andersen.

Today, a facelift has changed compact Francistown from a dusty frontier mining town into a stopping-off place for stocking up at the supermarket, shopping mall and markets, obtaining fuel and vehicle spares, and maybe try your luck at the casinos or visit a night club. Francistown is located 250 mi/410 km northeast of Gaborone.
