Best known today for its 44-hour-long car race every June, Le Mans actually has much of historic interest. The longest Roman wall in France is there, as is an extensive and well-restored medieval quarter (it's especially nice around the cathedral). Racing aficionados should not miss the automobile museum and its collection of vintage cars, located near the racetrack. Le Mans is now only one hour from Paris by high-speed train (TGV) and about 115 mi/185 km southwest by road.
