Most travelers find themselves in this coffee-trading center because of its proximity to the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Trekking companies depart from Moshi early every morning and head into the Kilimanjaro National Park to lead climbs. It's also a stop on the intercity bus route, but be warned the bus station there is frantic, and a real danger of being robbed of your possessions exists. There is an interesting Clock Tower in town, but the best thing to do if you find yourself there for any length of time is to trek up the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro to see the waterfalls. The Ngoma Falls are more than 165 ft/50 m tall. The less dramatic Marangu Falls also have a great picnic spot. The fertile slopes around Moshi are fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro, and it has the ideal climate to grow coffee. The beans are auctioned to international buyers at the Coffee Board. 275 mi/445 km northwest of Dar es Salaam.
