St Croix Things to See & Do Guide

St Croix Shopping

Compared with St. Thomas, shopping is relaxed and low-key on St. Croix (and the merchants have more time to help you). The selection is more limited, but there are still plenty of good buys: designer clothes, gold jewelry, gemstones (set or unset), china and glassware, cameras, watches, leather goods, perfume, porcelain and liquor.

Frederiksted has a very small collection of duty-free shops downtown near the dock, but most stores on St. Croix are in the center of Christiansted on King, Company and Strand streets. Other shopping areas worth a look include Caravelle Arcade and Pan Am Pavilion (both off Strand Street), King's Alley Walk and along the boardwalk.

The galleries on St. Croix display exceptional art at surprisingly low prices. Take a look during Christiansted's Art Thursday, held the first Thursday evening of the month November-April. Most artists host small receptions where they discuss their work. A map detailing locations of participating studios is available at the Tourism Department's office and most hotels. Keep in mind that original art and crafts are not included in your US$1,600 duty-free allowance.

Be aware that the local shops recommended by tour operators, taxi drivers and cruise-ship lecturers generally pay for the privilege. Prices at these shops may be somewhat higher than others, but you'll usually get a money-back guarantee, valid for 30 days.

Shopping Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm. Some shops stay open till 8 pm. Very few shops are open on Sunday.
