Area Map of Tortola Island

The 12-mi-/9-km-long by 3-mi-/5-km-wide island of Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands. The mountainous island was formed by volcanic activity and lies near an earthquake fault, so minor earthquakes are not uncommon. Its highest peak is Mount Sage at 1,750 ft/540 m, and its capital and only named city is Road Town, on a protected harbor in the south-central portion of the island. The coastline is dotted with more than a dozen smaller harbors and pristine white-sand beaches.
