Virgin Gorda is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands with an area of 8 sq mi/21 sq km. Considered part of the West Indies and located 80 mi/130 km east of Puerto Rico, the island takes the form of two vertical rectangles joined by a point of land. Its southwest peninsula is flat and strewn with gigantic granite boulders, several of which are more than 30 ft/9 m high. The northern side of the island is hilly with its highest point, Virgin Peak, at 1,359 ft/420 km. The main and only town, Spanish Town, lies on the southern part of the island, and the western coast is dotted with stunning white-sand beaches and a string of protected bays.
