Overview

Professional Review

This property would shine as a frontrunner in a less-competitive market, but in Washington's sea of big-gun rivals, it gets lost.

Accommodations are the focal points of this 16-story hotel, but even the well-designed public areas are much more attractive than those at the bustling Hyatt, one block up New Jersey Avenue. For those in the know, this is a fine and dependable D.C. address, a bargain by comparison.

A canopied entrance with square columns opens to reception, and three glass elevators rise through the glass roof of the atrium. The four-story atrium displays a geometric marble fountain with gurgling waters that resound in the elegant new open-plan Bistro 525, which serves innovative American cuisine.

Beyond is the low-slung, denlike Federal City Bar, which features live entertainment most weeknights. An art gallery hides on the second floor, and shops dot the hotel's public spaces.

Recreational facilities are limited to a complimentary exercise room and a sauna. Function space, including 15 separate meeting rooms, holds 550 people at capacity, and the business center offers secretarial services. Parking is expensive.

Regular updating keeps the accommodations looking good. All show pleasing contemporary style: floor-to-ceiling drapes, wrought-iron coffee tables, plump upholstered chairs with ottomans (sofas in king rooms), custom armoires with TVs and minibars, and quilted spreads and ruffles that add some refinement to the beds.

Comfortable and traditional, these quarters are more spacious than those down the block at the Hyatt. Voice mail, data ports, high-speed Internet access and fair-sized closets with irons and ironing boards are also standard.

Marble baths supply vanity mirrors, phones, second TVs and hair dryers. Rooms ending in -15 through -22 on the top floors boast excellent views of the Capitol building. Room service answers until 11 pm, and the morning newspaper is complimentary. Pets are not permitted.

Travelers seeking proximity to Union Station and Capitol Hill and who love great rooms at fair rates thrive here.
