Windsor Guide Overview

Windsor, England, a pleasant town along the Thames 20 mi/30 km west of London, is home to Windsor Castle, the most accessible of all the royal properties. The castle's highlights include St. George's Chapel, Albert Memorial Chapel, Queen Mary's Dolls' House and the state apartments. A formal garden—the first in more than 100 years—opened in 2002 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's 50 years on the throne. The vast Windsor Great Park, which stretches south from the castle, is a fine setting for a walk. Sir Christopher Wren lived there, and you can dine or stay in his house, which is now a small hotel.

If you're traveling with children, Legoland Windsor offers a change of pace from all the history. More than just a theme park, Legoland combines interactive attractions, rides and shows with the famous building blocks. Each roller coaster in the park is themed with elements from popular Lego sets. There are also attractions for toddlers, including a scaled-down village with pint-sized rides. Guests will want to check out Legoland Windsor's small version of Cape Canaveral and John F. Kennedy Space Center in Miniland. The park is on Winkfield Road. Famous Eton College, noted for educating royals and statesmen, is just across the Thames. It's open to the public for tours.
