Set in a prized, four-story classic 1884 building with wrought-iron balconies commandeering a prime corner in the chicest quadrangle in Madrid, this property is as notable as its address. Its location is 2.5 km from the Atocha railway station. Dining is sumptuous, and the low room count and fine service-oriented staff combine to make a very inviting atmosphere. This is no mini-version of a grand hotel, but rather something akin to an intimate country inn anchored to one of Madrid's smartest shopping and dining districts.
Staffers welcome guests with smiles and efficiency in the cozy lobby. Gentle lighting casts shadows
on teak-framed sofas and black-and-white marble floors in the inviting sitting area. Drinks are offered both here and in the semicircular lounge, with a fine selection of wines to tempt guests.
The restaurant has a loyal following, and local critics have given it glowing reviews. Although it serves all meals, the attention is focused on the excellent dinner menu featuring New Spanish fare. Coffered ceilings, raised-panel walls, formal table settings and attentive service add polish to every meal.
The lack of meeting rooms instills a sense of calm here, and free parking pleases motorists. Pets are allowed.
The fair-sized guest rooms combine lovely traditional accents with contemporary staples. Design is evident in high ceilings, crown molding, wainscoting, drapes with ruffled valances, plush wool carpeting, potted plants, tasteful lighting and modern art. Common also are thermostats, desks or dressing tables, phones with voice mail and data ports, TVs, minibars, safes, king beds with shams and good storage space. Hotel-wide Wi-Fi was recently added. Marble baths, including some shower-only models, come with hair dryers, robes and high-grade toiletries. The very spacious superior rooms are the same size as the suites, but they lack walls between sitting and sleeping areas. Room service is on call at all hours, and turndown is provided on request.
This is one of Madrid's best hotels, offering a calm epicenter location, a fine staff, excellent dining, and decor that is neither too traditional nor too modern. The attentiveness and courtesy of the staff exceeds even the Ritz and AC hotels.
