Once an accommodation wasteland, American Samoa now has three international-standard properties. Most charming is the 14-room Sadie Thompson Inn, a modern version of the historic hotel frequented by W. Somerset Maugham, where some rooms have views of Pago Pago Harbor. The inn's owners recently transformed two wings of the derelict Rainmaker Hotel in the comfortable Sadie's by the Sea; it's the only American Samoan hotel with a beach. Near the airport, the efficient Clarion Tradewinds Hotel appeals to business travelers with a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and high-speed Internet access in its rooms.
Another alternative would be to stay in bungalows, private homes or fales (traditional Samoan houses—they have no walls to let the breezes in). Contact the National Park of American Samoa for information.
