One of the finest museums in Alaska, this facility covers indigenous lifestyles, European explorations, Russian colonization and the statehood years, including such topics as the 1964 earthquake and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Three floors filled with fascinating exhibits offer history and art, life-sized dioramas of Alaska Native villages and traveling exhibits. Free documentary videos are shown daily in summer. Five times daily, 45-minute guided tours are provided. Cafe operated by the Marx Brothers, who have a popular restaurant in town, and a gift shop with quality arts and crafts.
