While you're in Georgia, plan to visit at least a few stately mansions and antebellum plantations—much of the South's culture and history can be found in these magnificent structures. Some of the nicest examples can be seen in a pleasant two-day circle drive from Atlanta. Head first to the stately mansions of Athens. Continue south to Madison and its mid-1800s homes and restored schoolhouse. Farther south is Milledgeville, known for its 1807 Gothic chapel and the 1838 Greek Revival Old Governor's Mansion.
Next, head to Clinton for a look at its colonial architecture. Then it's on to Macon where you can stay overnight in an 1842 Greek Revival home that is now a hotel (the 1842 Inn) and visit more than 50 local sites that are listed on the National Register. Finally, travel north through Gone With the Wind country to Jonesboro and tour that city's 23 historic sites before returning to Atlanta.
