About a two-hour drive west of San Juan, Arecibo is home to the world's largest radar telescope and an astronomical research center managed in part by Cornell University.
An interactive visitors center connects to the outdoor deck where you can see the telescope dangling over a giant sinkhole. (You may recognize the complex from the movie
Contact, starring Jodie Foster.) The facility is open to the public Wednesday-Friday noon-4 pm, Saturday, Sunday and most holidays 9 am-4 pm. Fees US$5 adults, US$3 children and seniors. Phone 787-878-2612.
