Bangor, on the banks of the Penobscot River in east-central Maine 135 mi/215 km northeast of Portland, is still a large pulp- and wood-producing city, supplied by the still-plentiful forests to the north. Be sure to stop downtown and see the Paul Bunyan statue (31 ft/9 m tall). You might also want to drive by author Stephen King's house on West Broadway—look for the wrought-iron fence in front of a large Victorian house.
Sightseeing
Bangor is a good base for day trips to Orono (a few miles/kilometers north of town), which is home to the University of Maine; the Penobscot Indian Reservation (a few miles/kilometers just past Old Town); and Bar harbor, on Mount Desert Island.
