On 8 beachfront hectares, 6 km north of town, this colorful property has the broadest appeal of any all-inclusive resort here for families, couples and singles of all ages. Beaches Negril offers plenty to talk about: five restaurants, seven bars, three freshwater pools and three whirlpools, at an all-inclusive rate that covers airport transfers from Montego Bay, food, drink, entertainment, service and taxes.
This structure resembles an 18th-century fortress with its solid limestone walls, thick timbers and patinaed wrought-iron lanterns. West Indian furniture of grand style and regal proportion gives credence to the aptly named Great Room, where arrivals cool off with cold towels and champagne before being directed to their island-chic abodes.
Guests can dine in a different room almost every night. The Mill offers pool and sea views at its indoor and outdoor Jamaican and international buffets. The open-air setting lends itself to attracting crowds without the confinement and is often the most popular eatery at the resort. Despite its name, the Georgian-styled Seville offers Caribbean food in a child-free
setting, although a few Iberian culinary influences are evident on the menu. The teppanyaki room features tableside Japanese cooking, and those with a penchant for pasta make their way to Cafe Carnival. A brick oven bakes up fresh pizzas, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma. Southwestern specialties are served in the saloon, and the beach grill proves convenient.
Every night has a theme, and the bandstand on the sand hosts parties, barbecues and dances. The lobby, piano, safari and swim-up bars are but a few of the thirst-quenching outlets. Children enjoy their own swim-up soda fountain at a pool in a families-only area. Children also have a nightclub, and adults take in the floorshows in the vast theater.
The nearly .5-km beachfront bustles with watersports, the fitness center is fully equipped, and tennis courts are across the street. Scuba diving is included in package rates. Most guests relegate themselves to the furnished pool decks for sunbathing or reading under umbrellas, only a few feet from snacks and a bar. A lazy river ebbs and flows with its own tide, floating guests from start to finish
in rubber rafts. An oversized chessboard, a shuffleboard court, sauna, massage services and a beauty salon round out the recreational facilities. Spa services are expensive but the perfect way for parents to take a break. Beachside treatments are, of course, the way to go.
Security keeps interlopers from coming in from the beach, and topless sunbathing, de rigueur at most Negril hotels, is frowned upon here, as management tries to keep everything to a PG rating. The wandering Sesame Street characters make that apparent, and the pirate-themed water park, waterslides and separate pool are always lively areas. Children also enjoy the electric bicycles and cars and the video-game room set up like a casino. A video-game station keeps teens indoors despite the tropical scenery. Minimal meeting facilities cater to gatherings of 75 people, and an Internet station allows guests to keep in touch with home.
Three-story buildings house beautifully outfitted accommodations, graded in nine categories. All have Mexican tile floors, French doors, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, armoires, club chairs, TVs, phones and safes.
Quality bedding tops two-poster mahogany beds, mainly kings, with 20 pairs of twins throw in. Tiled baths have dressing tables, hair dryers, spacious vanities, decent lighting and pickled molding. Substantial toiletry kits are doled out at check-in but never offered again. Guests in suites are pampered with concierge service, and four-posters are standard. Fully stocked minibars, robes and room service are also among the benefits in suites. Guests can use three self-service laundries and the regular dry-cleaning service.
Poor soundproofing in guest quarters here erases the relaxing effects of the hotel's outdoor amenities. Smoking is no longer allowed indoors, but this is rarely a problem, as there is plentiful outdoor space (with better views) for lighting up. This resort is far more cohesive and better planned than Breezes in Montego Bay, and guests here have access to Beach Sandy Bay, as well. Families are able to take best advantage of the facilities here, and housekeeping is keen on picking up after any messy young guests. A two-night minimum is in effect and is reflected in the rates posted here.
