Located next door to its modest sibling, the Buena Vista Suites, this is the nation's largest all-suite hotel, a vast, convenient complex (150,000 sq ft of meeting space), well-designed and well-suited to the large groups it hosts. The aging accommodations are contained in a trio of residential-looking 10-story towers and 120 spacious villa units with full kitchens.
Public and meeting space is thoughtfully relegated to the three-story building in front. Maroon and coral hues grace the buildings. The lobby is designed around a two-story wall of glass framing a grotto and waterfall beyond. Numerous sitting areas are spread over two levels, with three dining outlets on the lower level.
The upscale Venetian Room
serves pricey Continental fare for lunch and dinner, while The Tropicale creates a lively atmosphere at all meals. The buffets are enormous. Unlike at its sibling, breakfast is not included in the rates here. Another all-day cafe is located next door at the Buena Vista Suites.
To the left of the lobby is an inviting lounge with a bank of TVs and views of the enormous rock-trimmed pool with its 75-ft-long waterslide. Active guests work out in two well-equipped fitness rooms and on two lighted tennis courts. Special programs, a playground and a game room serve the younger set. The hotel boasts meeting space for more than 3,000, and parking and transport to area attractions are free.
Accommodations vary only slightly
from tower to tower. However, maintenance is inconsistent, with aging fabrics and furniture evident in many of the units. All the units are large one- or two-bedroom suites with tepid tropical decor, contrasting fabrics in bold rainbow hues, lemon-yellow wall coverings, and commercial furnishings.
The hotel's Caribbean imprint is most noticeable in the accommodations. The spacious quarters have sitting rooms with sofa beds, dining tables, consoles for TVs, wet bars, coffeemakers, microwave ovens and refrigerators. The mostly queen bedrooms furnish irons and ironing boards and TVs in armoires, while baths have dressing nooks, massaging showerheads and hair dryers.
A handful of king-bedded suites boast whirlpool tubs. The 120 two- and three-bedroom villas, each done in intense Floridian tones, offer superior appointments, sitting rooms, full kitchens, multiple bedrooms and baths, whirlpools and screened lanais.
Room service operates until midnight. Pets are not permitted in the hotel.
Because of its isolated location, daunting room count and largely group-oriented clientele, individuals are likely to feel out of place here. However, the competent staff and well-designed facilities provide large groups with an all-suite alternative to the nearby Orlando World Center Marriott.
