This picturesque hillside village (pop. 300) lies on a medieval pilgrimage route in the southern part of the Massif Central. In addition to lovely scenery, there is the Romanesque Abbey of Ste. Foi, which was founded by Benedictine monks. It is famous for the 12th-century tympanum over the church's west portal: It depicts the Last Judgment, complete with 124 figures. The abbey's cloister houses a treasury with medieval gold religious objects. Conques is also home to a research and resource center that studies the art and civilizations of medieval Europe. 105 mi/170 km northeast of Toulouse.
