Located at the mouth of the Humber River, Corner Brook is Newfoundland's second-largest city. Be sure to see the Captain James Cook Monument National Historic Site, which commemorates the great explorer's charting of the area (there's a monument to Cook at the head of the bay). Also worth a visit is the Sir Richard Squires Building/Government Center, which is an impressive structure with a glass fountain from the Czechoslovakian Pavilion at Montreal's Expo 67, a library and Internet cafe. Take some time to shop for traditional and locally made crafts (carvings, pottery and fishermen's sweaters) at the Newfoundland Emporium and the Corner Brook Tourist Chalet and Crafts Centre. You can also visit the Games Centre, which was built for the 1999 Canada Games, and the Hockey Hall of Fame located there highlights many interesting tidbits from Canada's national game.
The Humber River around Corner Brook is a good place to fish for salmon. If you have time, make the drive out Route 450 to Blow Me Down Provincial Park, near the mouth of the Humber. The park also offers good hiking trails. Just east of Corner Brook is Marble Mountain ski area, which averages 16 ft/5 m of snow each winter. It's put to good use on 27 downhill runs. There are also trails for cross-country skiing and a comfortable chalet. Corner Brook is 250 mi/400 km northwest of St. John's.
