Located in the heart of this city's revitalized downtown, this hotel occupies an attractive 12-story trapezoidal building within walking distance of the convention center, arena and state Capitol. It is a full step below the renovated Renaissance, but a safer bet than the spotty Sheraton. The hotel's trendy, atypical styling is one of its most salient points, and its strong maintenance program helps, too.
Valets await at the motor entrance on the first level. The stylish lobby one floor up displays inlaid marble floors, several sitting areas with curving contemporary furniture, and a bank of elevators with brushed-steel doors.
A bolder palette is used in the restaurant, which offers a buffet in a room of its own, and in the chic lounge, where burnished-silver sconces and built-in leather sofas create a posh feel. At inspection, the hotel was gearing up to relocate and renovate the restaurant. Starbucks provides early risers with an alternative to a sit-down breakfast.
Health buffs head to the second floor for the 24-hour exercise room, sauna, and small pool with tile deck and glass walls. Meeting space is varied and ample, with rooms seating from 20 to 550 for banquets. Glass walls flood several breakout foyers with light. Motorists pay a steep
nightly fee to park here. (A nearby public lot charges almost half the rate charged here.)
The attractive guest quarters are regularly freshened and feature muted earth-tone color schemes, modern art and inlaid furniture. All rooms have new carpeting and paint. Capacious desks are well lit, but the task chairs are uncomfortable for long work sessions. Phones provide voice mail and data ports, and TVs hide in armoires. Wireless Internet access is available in both the guest rooms and the public areas for a fee. Coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, and one king, one queen or two double beds are standard. Some of the baths could use updating, with modest oversights among the bright tile. They all supply hair dryers and good toiletries. Premium rooms offer breakfast and drink coupons (but no lounge), fax machines, robes, shoeshine machines and larger TVs.
This well-maintained hotel is a good choice for executives or leisure travelers who value spacious accommodations and a smiling staff over glitzy public areas and notable on-site dining. Those seeking out the latter should opt for the more expensive Loews or Hermitage.
