Evansville Guide Overview

Many eras of Midwestern history are on display in this southwest Indiana town. Remnants of ancient residents are on view at Angel Mound State Historic Site, which features interactive exhibits about the people of the Middle Mississippian culture who inhabited this area 1100-1450.

Just across the river in Henderson, Kentucky, is the John J. Audubon Museum (the naturalist and artist lived in the area 1810-19). Evansville Museum Transportation Center details the history of early river, rail, aviation and street transportation and includes a steam engine, club car and caboose from the early 1900s.

Downtown Evansville is also home to Casino Aztar and its neighboring US$40 million entertainment complex called The District. The complex is filled with restaurants, nightclubs and Jillian's Billiards Club with pool, bowling and a giant games arcade.

Ellis Park Race Track is just minutes from downtown Evansville. Built in 1922 and owned by Churchill Downs, the track features Thoroughbred races five days a week July through Labor Day.
