Moscow is undergoing tremendous changes and cultural events are flourishing, with performances in such impressive venues as the Bolshoi Theater. However, most events in Moscow occur without much advance publicity.

5 SepCity of Moscow Day. Public holiday. A flag-raising ceremony at Tverskaya Ploshchad opens the festivities. For two days, the streets are filled with theatrical performances and pop, Soviet-era, folk, alternative, jazz and other ethnic music. Also Sunday night fireworks and student parades. 7 SepMoscow International Peace Marathon. The marathon starts and ends at St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, and the mostly flat course follows the Moscow River and passes many of the city's major sights. 7 Jan-Russian Orthodox Christmas. Both a national and religious holiday, Russian Orthodox Christmas is one of the most popular celebrations of the year. Religious services begin just before midnight on 6 January and last until dawn at St. Basil's Cathedral and Epiphany Cathedral.
