In a busy area north of the Liffey, right on the city's historic central thoroughfare, this hotel occupies in a landmark 1817 building. Unfortunately, O'Connell Street has deteriorated into a corridor of fast-fooderies, cheap shops and multiplex cinemas. The Gresham's dour five-story Georgian building, though, signals bright relief from the street, which may not be reliably safe at night. This is one reason why this hotel ranks far below the superior Berkeley Court, Conrad and Shelbourne in the
