Destination Guidebook for Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Hamilton sits on the Niagara Escarpment, a distinct vertical wall that separates the upper and lower city. Known as the mountain, this wall is the defining feature of the city. Streets continue from the bottom of the mountain to the top, with the prefix of upper added to streets on the mountain. Lower Hamilton is home to Defasco and Stelco, twin giant steel manufacturers. On the mountain, you can find spectacular views of the city and harbor. Although only certain streets stretch to the top of the mountain, you can park your car and hike upward.

Home of the famous Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons, Hamilton is also a thriving cultural metropolis with no shortage of activities. Orchestra, choirs, ballet, theater—they're all there and well supported by a strong arts community. The Royal Botanical Gardens is a favorite spot of tourists and locals during the summer months. Dundurn Castle, the restored residence of Sir Allan MacNab (a premier of the province of Canada before confederation) is now a national historic site.

Hamilton harbors one of the biggest shopping secrets in Ontario—Ottawa Street. Known for its overwhelming variety of home-decor shops, you'll also find yarn, craft and clothing stores punctuated by independently run cafes and restaurants. Hamilton has a strong Italian and Portuguese heritage, so expect to see lace treasures you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the province. It's a favorite destination of brides to be. And a visit to Hamilton would not be complete without a trip to Stoney Creek Dairy. With more than 50 flavors of ice cream, there really is something for everyone.

Although considerably milder in temperature than most of Ontario, Hamilton is subject to harsh storms and changeable weather patterns. The upper city is generally hotter and more humid in the summer and susceptible to snow squalls in the winter. 45 mi/60 km west of Toronto.
