Professional Review for Hedonism III

Other

Opened in 2000, Hedonism III targets a market similar to that of its elder sibling Hedonism II in Negril but sports a more modern look. Throwing politically correct virtue to the wind, this freeing resort appeals mainly to a swinging crowd intent on the kind of fleshy pursuits that brought down the Roman Empire. The three sections of the resort have something for everyone—nudity, optional clothing or mandatory clothing—but the skittish should stick to the tamer all-inclusives found along this sparkling coast.

Public areas are scattered about in an architectural hodgepodge centered on a large free-form pool with grottos. Besides the big buffet terrace restaurant, which features poolside dining, Hedonism III boasts three specialty restaurants. One is Jamaican, and another offers Japanese cuisine in a minimalist room with plank floors and mullion windows. Common to many of SuperClubs' other properties, these teppanyaki eateries double as entertainment outlets. Pastafari serves Italian fare in a casual cafe style with an open kitchen. Both the Japanese and Italian restaurants require reservations. Two outdoor grills churn out burgers and hot dogs, and the most unusual option of the two is the nude grill where guests chow down in the buff.

Entertainment ranges from staff-produced stage skits to Roman-style theme parties alternating between wild and wilder, and a piano bar helps guests warm up for the disco. Reggae beach parties, toga parties and circus shows are staples here, and guests are encouraged to wear nothing, or next to nothing, at the infamous pajama parties. Many guests will argue that they need no outside help in creating opportunities for entertainment here, as is readily evident during a tour through the pool areas late at night.

Although there are two marginal beaches here, much of the action takes place around the pools. One has a unique billiard table built into it, and another features a see-through waterslide snaking down through the disco (and down which plummet occasionally naked bodies). Au Natural extends from a nude pool to a small beach with pier extension, and a second beach of modest scale is preferred by the swimsuit-clad. Four whirlpools include one with an X-rated see-through bottom.

Swingers of another kind get their highs on a trapeze, for which daily classes are offered. Tennis, basketball, volleyball and table tennis are offered, and Hobie Cats, sea kayaks, sailboards, waterskiing and snorkeling highlight the water pursuits. Certified divers can go at it, but diving classes cost extra. A gym lets guests work off any excess energy, as do aerobics classes and circus workshops. Five new beachfront gazebos are the ideal sunset locale. A spa offers massages, as well as a sauna, and an Internet station proffers convenient communications options. A few wireless Internet hot spots also are available throughout the grounds for those with their laptops.

Accommodations, in three-story plantation-style units, are a significant improvement on Hedonism II's, with more tasteful, Otherlivelier decor. Whites and creams predominate, although spreads span the colors of the rainbow. Strategically placed mirrors satisfy the narcissistic voyeur within (the hotel warns guests that objects appearing in the mirrors may be larger than they appear), ceiling-mounted TVs excite with adult programming, and tiled floors, phones, CD players, radios, safes, coffeemakers, irons and hair dryers are also standard. Although the quality of furnishings is far from impressive, the lights are usually dimmed when guests are en suite, so few seem to notice. Gleaming marble baths come with whirlpool tubs. One block enfolds a pool and offers the island's first "swim-up rooms." Categories range from choice of view to choice of attire (meaning that some rooms are on the clothing-optional side of the resort). The poolside nude rooms are among the most requested.

Room service delivers a breakfast menu only. Where Hedonism II is billed as "naughty but nice," its sprightlier sibling is "wet and wild." Prepare for an adventure unlike anything else, but with people who seem to respect others' varying levels of curiosity. Housekeeping is excellent and thankfully so, considering what goes on here. Single guests are often booked on a shared-room plan, paired with another single guest of the same sex. Guests younger than 18 and their pets are simply not allowed. No one has ever accused this resort of being tasteful or classy, and guests should be forewarned of the overriding hedonistic philosophy here. Many arrive a bit shy but leave without an inkling of inhibition.
