This hotel, on the seaside, abutting rough-and-tumble Tahiti Beach, 10 minutes' drive from the center, changes its name more frequently than it does its carpets or menus. Despite the slightly frayed condition, this is the best hotel on this stretch of coast (not for fancy guest quarters, but rather pristine views), and it offers a resorty option to the often frenetic in-town hotels.
Public areas wrap around a lovely freeform pool with extensive foliage, but ocean views are blocked out by accommodations wings. The common rooms have a warm and friendly feel with plenty of regional accents, but they suffer from extensive wear and tear from frequent use. The spectacular mosaic fountain beside the entrance appears to have been borrowed
from Spain's Alhambra. The hotel's multilevel arrangement discourages disabled guests from booking here. Downstairs, reception features a marble floor and wicker and upholstered seating.
A light breakfast is included in the rates. Moroccan, Spanish, Italian and international fare is featured in four dining rooms, and nightly music in the Moroccan restaurant supplements entertainment in the lobby lounge and nightclub.
The moderate prices in the Thalasso spa are indicative of its well-received offerings. The attractive main pool has an extensive deck, and the heated saltwater pool is open year-round. The fitness
club offers a rather dreary health-food snack bar, and tennis courts and mud baths complete the offerings. Conference facilities accommodate groups of 200, but expect few high-tech amenities.
Inconveniently, minuscule elevators rise to guest rooms in low-rise wings. The units have simple white stucco walls, old tiled floors with worn rugs, rattan seating, latticework armoires, TVs with English-language channels, air-conditioning, safes, minibars, phones, large beds, balconies and half-tiled baths with WCs. Opt for one of the cabana units in the building adjacent to the spa center, as they are relatively newer and have beachy accents: painted clouds on the corridor ceilings, pastel color schemes and wooden balconies overlooking the ocean. Still, the towels are skimpy, the sundeck can be scattered with litter, and housekeeping puts little effort into keeping public areas free from trash.
Room service operates on a regular schedule. The pleasant staff works hard to provide a pinch of things international in this Moroccan beach setting, but the maintenance team lags infinitely behind. Loose management is difficult to locate and makes immediate needs an absolute impossibility. This is an interesting option for midrange business travelers and families, but many will come away wishing they had paid less money for these unkempt digs.
