Lambertville sits directly across the Delaware River from New Hope, Pennsylvania, an artists colony popular with visitors (it's crowded on weekends). Perhaps as a result, Lambertville has become New Jersey's prime locale for antiques shops and art galleries. The town also has a fine selection of country inns and restaurants overlooking (or at least near) the river, making it an ideal place to stay overnight for anyone visiting Trenton. You can cross the bridge on foot to get a good look at the river. Each year in April, Lambertville hosts the Shad Festival, where the public is invited to feast on fish at long, paper-covered tables next to the Delaware River.
While in the area, consider a visit to nearby Titusville, where there are two worthwhile attractions. The Howell Living History Farm re-creates turn-of-the-20th-century agriculture, and Washington Crossing State Park commemorates the place where the general made his famous crossing of the Delaware River on 25 December 1776. (A re-enactment of Gen. Washington's crossing is held annually on Christmas Day.) Drive along Continental Lane through the park to follow his army's route. 45 mi/70 km southwest of Newark.
