A pretty town 70 mi/110 km south of Salzburg in the scenic East Tirol region, Lienz has an impressive castle, Schloss Bruck, that overlooks the city and contains a regional museum—plan a one-night stay there. Nearby Zettersfeld peak offers downhill and cross-country skiing during the winter. In the summer, try hiking Grossglockner peak, Austria's highest at 12,455 ft/3,797 m.
