The northernmost atoll off Belize is composed of several coral isles, including Big Northern Caye, which has an airstrip and a dive lodge, Lighthouse Reef Resort. Nearby is the Blue Hole, the deepwater dive site that so impressed Jacques Cousteau. It's a collapsed cave that has unusual rock formations but little marine life besides sharks. Lighthouse Reef also encompasses Half Moon Caye National Monument, one of the country's first national preserves. This island has an old lighthouse and is a protected nesting area for red-footed boobies.
