Lisbon See & Do Guide: Se Cathedral

Se Cathedral

Sightseeing - Historic Sites
Largo da Se, Lisbon, Portugal
Phone: 21-886-6752

Lisbon's cathedral (Se is short for sedes episcopalis, the bishop's seat), the oldest church in the city, was built from 1147, most likely on the site of an ancient mosque. Its original Romanesque design was transformed over the centuries, incorporating elements of various architectural and decorative styles. St. Anthony of Lisbon, patron saint of the city, was baptized there, and members of the Portuguese nobility were buried there. Visit the cloister and the adjacent museum, which details the cathedral's past. The prime object of the treasure is a golden ostensory dating from 1760. Under the garden of the cloister are remains of a street and canalisation from Roman times. There are occasional organ concerts—check locally. The cathedral is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 am-7 pm, Sunday and Monday 9 am-5 pm. Hours for the cloister and the treasury museum are shorter (both are closed on Sunday). 1 euro to enter the cloister and ruins, 2.50 euros to enter the treasury museum. Largo da Se, Alfama, Lisbon. Phone 21-886-6752.
