Louisville See & Do Guide: Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs

Sightseeing - Historic Sites

The stately twin spires that so readily identify the roofline of Churchill Downs resemble church steeples to some people. It's a fitting allegory for such a hallowed place, home to the most historic horse-racing event in the U.S. Although the museum next door is state-of-the-art, it pales in comparison to the sight of dozens of thoroughbreds galloping on the sandy dirt track during an early-morning run. Call ahead and make reservations for a guided tour to see the horses and their stables behind the track. These popular tours sell out quickly in the summertime, so plan well in advance. Museum open Monday-Saturday 8 am-5 pm. Tours are offered mid-March to November. Various tours available; call or visit the Web site for details. Tours cost US$10 (plus the US$10 admission to the Kentucky Derby Museum). 704 Central Ave., Louisville. Phone 502-637-1111. Toll-free 800-283-3729. http://www.churchilldowns.com. http://www.derbymuseum.org.
