Lower Fort Garry National Historic Park Travel Guide

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Park Guide Overview

When you visit this well-preserved 1830s fort, you'll find a store, a doctor's house, a men's dormitory and other structures all built from limestone. They're filled with authentic artifacts from the fur-trading days. The whole place comes alive thanks to costumed interpreters, who greet you as characters of the period and answer your questions. (The fort was built to replace Upper Fort Garry—the original British settlement farther south at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine rivers that was severely damaged by spring flooding.) Plan a half-day visit by car from Winnipeg and stop for a traditional hot dog lunch at Skinner's in Lockport, just south of Selkirk. Fort Garry Park is 20 mi/32 km northeast of Winnipeg.
