Set in a somewhat arid area near the Zambia border (in the south), Lubumbashi is the complete opposite of Kinshasa. A relatively compact city with gardens, nicely kept homes and red-dirt roads, it's worth a night's visit just to experience the difference in climate and culture from the rest of the country. With the exception of touring the mining areas, however, there's little to do. 975 mi/1,570 km southeast of Kinshasa.
