Near Hamburg, Luneburg is a Hanseatic League city that was very prosperous in the Middle Ages—many fine old buildings and houses remain from the 14th and 15th centuries. Some of them have step-gable roofs and ornate facades. It's simply a great place to spend an afternoon strolling the narrow streets and sampling the fare in its many pubs and restaurants. The nearby Luneburger Heide, a heath between Luneburg, Hamburg and Bremen, is best visited from mid-August to mid-September, when the heather is in bloom.
