Maldives Hotel Guide

Guide to Maldives Hotels

Accommodations range from first class to just above basic, and most are very clean and well-run. The Maldives is distinctive in that almost every hotel is on its own island. But the hotels are less isolated than it sounds—other islands often lie within sight, and although some hotels are within a 20-minute boat ride from Male', others are further away and can take up to 90 minutes by boat, depending on the weather. Seaplane journeys are also available. Almost all resorts have their own dive master, and many have diving schools that offer an international PADI diving certificate. If you want to learn, it is wise to take a letter from your doctor stating there is no health problem that could prevent you from diving.

Spas have also become popular in the Maldives, and every new resort attempts to out-pamper its neighbor. Most upscale resorts offer a range of treatments from straightforward massages and facials to more holistic sessions based on Ayurvedic medicine. We even saw a Maldivian sand massage. Yoga and meditation classes are offered throughout the resorts. Many resorts offer morning meetings on the beach with visiting international teachers or gurus. Most resorts also offer a fitness center.

Note that some of the low-end properties have hot water and electricity for only a few hours in the morning and evening, when their generators are working.

If you want extreme seclusion and mobility, try staying on a safari boat, also known as a yacht dhoni. These comfortable wooden motor yachts accommodate eight to 12 passengers. Be sure to reserve your cabin in advance—and be sure to specify what kind of activity you prefer: diving, sailing, fishing or surfing.
