The historic Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens divide the eastern side of the Central Business District, near Parliament House, from the genteel suburb of East Melbourne. There you will find city workers lunching in the sunshine, grand avenues lined with elm trees, ferneries, an ornamental pond with a monument to former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and hungry brushtail possums that emerge at dusk in search of food. The Fitzroy Gardens are also home to Captain Cook's Cottage, which is actually the former Yorkshire home of the explorer's parents. Cottage open daily 9 am-5:30 pm. A$11 families, A$4 adults, A$2 children. Spring Street, Wellington Parade, Treasury Place and Lansdowne Street, East Melbourne, Melbourne. Phone 9419-4677.
