Muharraq Travel Guide

Muharraq Guide Overview

Once the center of Bahrain's pearl trade, Muharraq is where you'll find the main airport. The city is connected to Manama by a short causeway. Attractions in town include the picturesque old town, the Abu Mahir Fort and the National Museum and Civic Center. The National Museum contains several superb displays, labeled in English and Arabic, which enliven the region's history. Outside of Cairo, we think it's one of the best museums in the Arab world. Consider stopping at Beit Sheikh Isa, a huge, spectacular 19th-century home, and the Beit Siyadi, the former home of a wealthy pearl merchant. Another fort, Qalaat Arad, dates from the 16th century. Of special interest are the reed fish traps, usually set up to dry on the beaches. We enjoyed watching this traditional method of fishing—best seen at low tide. If you're in Bahrain in April, attend the Great Muharraq Raft Race. Allow about a half-day to see Muharraq.
