In Kathmandu and Pokhara you can find everything from luxury hotels to moderate- and budget-priced inns and guesthouses. In Kathmandu, the most upscale hotels are located along Durbar Marg and to a lesser extent in the neighborhood of Lazimpat, which also contains many diplomatic compounds. Travelers on a more modest budget should head for Thamel, which abounds in midrange and budget hotels, or Freak Street, which contains many of the cheapest joints in town.
The most well-known hotel for travelers is the Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel. With its own garden, it's an oasis of calm in the center of the city. In Lazimpat, the Hotel Tibet is well-run with comfortable rooms.
Everywhere else, just try to find the best available lodging (in small towns, it may be a mat in the loft of someone's barn). Trekkers on organized expeditions are usually provided with tents or stop at small teahouses along the trail. Jungle lodges generally offer well-equipped bungalows or, for travelers with less to spend, some type of tent-camp accommodations. The Everest View Hotel (open only in season) is still the preferred lodging in the Khumbu, about four days from base camp. It even has its own airstrip, a 50-minute flight from Kathmandu, but flying straight up from the valley may induce altitude sickness and is not recommended.
