Accommodations range from deluxe international hotels and resorts to bed-and-breakfasts, boarding houses, bungalows, quaint inns, houseboats, hostels, farm lodging and campgrounds. Many classic canal houses have been turned into modern, upscale hotels, and some of the rooms are quite unusual: On our last visit, our room was up under the rafters—it had its own staircase from the elevator floor. We generally prefer staying in the smaller local hotels. They're very clean, and the staff adds a personal touch to the service. We also recommend a stay aboard an old working vessel or at a private home (http://www.citymundo.com). Don't, however, be surprised to find that accommodations in general are expensive.
