Accommodations range from very nice first-class properties to basic, locally managed inns and hotels. Most are pleasant enough, with adequate facilities. Hotels on Ile des Pins and Lifou may be very basic thatched huts and offer only limited nightlife, but to make up for it, some are on the most beautiful beaches in the world. A system of Melanesian-operated inns or gites has been established throughout the territory, generally offering thatched bungalows in rural areas. Most gites also allow camping for a minimal rate, and meals can be ordered. Numerous municipal campgrounds along the west coast of Grande Terre provide free camping space. The original Club Med, at Anse Vata near Noumea, closed but a newer one near Hienghene on the northeast coast of Grande Terre remains.
