Northampton, where former U.S. President Calvin Coolidge lived and practiced law after attending Amherst College, is a well-preserved 19th-century town with a thriving arts community. It's also home to Smith College, whose Museum of Art showcases paintings by 19th- and 20th-century French and American masters.
