This is one of the most famous of the Tenjin (Heavenly God) shrines, which are located throughout Japan. This one is noted for its inner shrine, built to protect the emperor in times of conflict, and it is a place where students pray for success on their high school and university entrance exams. It has been destroyed by fire several times since it was built in AD 949. The Tenjin Matsuri Festival is a highlight each year in mid-July. Daily 7:30 am-7 pm.
