During the Reign of Terror, this palace and seat of power was a stopping point for prisoners on their way to the guillotine. It is especially beautiful at night, as it is lit up against the Seine. You can see the cells of Maximilien Robespierre, Georges-Jacques Danton and Marie Antoinette in a setting of beautiful 14th-century Gothic architecture. The Salle des Gens d'Armes, built 1302-1313, is most impressive: It is the largest secular hall of the Middle Ages.
